Question 1

What is GenOffice?

Accepted Answer

GenOffice is the world's first full-featured, open-source AI desktop office suite created by Genspark. It includes native editors for Docs (.docx), Sheets (.xlsx), Slides (.pptx), PDF, Markdown, and HTML, equipped with a dedicated built-in AI panel that edits your files directly rather than acting as a disconnected chatbot.

Question 2

How does GenOffice replace Microsoft Office 365 and Copilot for free?

Accepted Answer

Microsoft charges $99 to $240 per year for Office 365 plus an extra $30 per month per user for Microsoft 365 Copilot ($360/year). GenOffice gives you full byte-preserving compatibility with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files and integrates local/bring-your-own-key AI agents directly into the editor for $0 perpetual cost.

Question 3

What does 'Byte-Preserving Round-Trip Editing' mean?

Accepted Answer

Unlike tools that convert Word documents to stripped-down HTML and lose complex formatting, GenOffice uses specialized Rust-based parsing. Only the exact paragraphs, rows, or slides touched by your AI prompt are modified; the remaining 99% of formatting, comments, styles, and formulas remain byte-for-byte intact for flawless opening in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Question 4

Which AI models and keys can I use with GenOffice?

Accepted Answer

You can sign in with Genspark, or bring your own API keys for Claude, OpenAI (GPT-4o), Google Gemini, DeepSeek, Qwen, Mistral, Grok, OpenRouter, or any local OpenAI-compatible endpoint (like Ollama or LM Studio) for 100% air-gapped private processing.

Question 5

How does the Sheets AI agent work?

Accepted Answer

In GenOffice Sheets, the AI writes real executable formulas (such as SUMIF, VLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH) and generates native charts into your workbook. It never pastes 'static numbers' over calculations, and every batch of changes includes an instant one-click rollback button.

Question 6

Does GenOffice have command-line (CLI) and coding agent support?

Accepted Answer

Yes. GenOffice ships with a 'genoffice' CLI and agent skills for Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Gemini CLI, and Copilot. Coding agents can create, convert, inspect, and patch real office documents without opening a GUI window.

Question 7

How does local document search work?

Accepted Answer

The home screen indexes the names, folders, and full text of all your documents in a local SQLite index on your PC. You can also ask questions across starred files with verified source citations.
